1. 2.5 % increase for the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). This is an increase in Social Security benefits (and other government benefits) to keep pace with inflation. IMPACT: An average of $30–$50 increase per month.
2. Repeal of Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). This is a rule that reduced Social Security benefits for people who worked in jobs where they didn’t pay into Social Security, like certain government jobs and other types of employment: teachers, police officers, and firefighters. IMPACT: The WEP reduction makes your Social Security benefits lower than expected, even if you worked for many years and paid into Social Security in some of those jobs. The repeal of WEP in 2025 will remove this reduction for people affected by it. The repeal could also lead to a retroactive payout averaging $6,710 and an increase in monthly benefits of up to $1,190 for those affected. For many, this could be a crucial financial boost during retirement.
3. Changes in Identification Verification. IMPACT: This change means that millions of people who rely on Social Security will need to adjust to new ways of managing their accounts either through an online portal or in person, with some facing barriers due to lack of internet access or difficulties accessing local offices. This change begins at the end of March 2025.
4. Earnings Test and Benefit Withholding. Workers who plan to continue working AFTER starting Social Security will experience a reduction in their benefits if they exceed $62,160 in the year that they reach full retirement age or $23,400 if they are under full retirement age . Once you reach full retirement age there is no earnings limit. Also, if the agency claims you were OVERPAID Social Security benefits, it can take your entire benefit payment each month until the debt is repaid.
5. Full retirement age is now 66 years and 10 months. IMPACT: While this doesn’t drastically change things for most workers, it does delay when full benefits are available.
NOTE: Social Security Benefits CANNOT be garnished by debt collectors, nor are debt collectors allowed to take money out of their bank accounts. They may sue for the debt but they cannot collect. Other monies from other sources are also protected as long as the other money in the account is less than twice the amount of the benefits given by Social Security. This income is PROTECTED.
